The Biggest Time-Wasters In Our World Today

Nowadays, it feels like there’s never really enough time to get things done. We’re always on the move, especially as adults, and occupied with things that society dictates as important. It appears as if most people function on auto-pilot and don’t really put much thought into their day-to-day actions. They mindlessly engage in pointless activities that add zero value to their lives, only dulling their minds. There are many things that take up way too much of our precious time, so here are five of the biggest time-wasters in our world today.

1. The Internet and Social Media

Just one more minute, you tell yourself as you keep scrolling down on Facebook and Instagram, liking and sharing various posts. Sure it’s fun connecting with millions of people all over the world, but it’s way too easy to become addicted. Either by keeping up with the latest trend, engaging in troll behavior, or trying to rack up more followers. Let’s be honest: there are far too many people who prefer to read celebrity gossip instead of a novel. In addition to time passing by, it seems that their brain cells are doing the same!

2. Lack of Priorities

Most people think they know what is best for themselves, but the simple truth is that they don’t. These are the kinds of people who form their opinions and decisions based on what everyone is saying and doing. Therefore their priorities are all messed up, and they find themselves spending money on expensive items in the name of acceptance and inclusion. With better priorities, these people could make better use of their time doing things that enrich their lives without any outside interference.

3. Biting Off More Than You Can Chew

Being a hard worker is a trait that is valued in nearly every country. But it shouldn’t be to the point of taking on more than you could possibly handle. As mentioned above, when people fail to set their priorities straight, they find themselves at the mercy of desires that aren’t entirely theirs. Even though you enjoy your job, it shouldn’t come before your overall happiness and well-being. Also by taking on too many responsibilities, you’re only adding unnecessary pressure on yourself, and in the end you won’t be able to perform at your peak.

4. Spending Too Much Time On the Phone

When done in moderation, there’s nothing wrong with chatting on the phone with family and friends. However it does become a bit of an issue when done in excess. What could be a quick text is instead a long-winded phone call that stretches for almost an hour, while your main priorities are placed on the back burner. This same applies to texting and messaging strangers on the internet.

5. Interruptions

Potential time-wasters aren’t always our fault, though. Sometimes, things just happen out-of-the-blue such as unexpected visitors, unplanned phone calls and random distractions and interruptions. It’s especially frustrating when you’re trying to get some important work done. While it’s impossible to fully avoid these situations, you can do your best to minimize their occurences. For example, try your best to keep your work and personal life separate as much as possible.
