Fun and Unexpected Jobs You Didn’t Know You Wanted
Let’s be honest – most jobs are pretty boring, especially the office ones. But despite what you may believe, this doesn’t always have to be the case. There are plenty of jobs out there that don’t suck the life out of you. You get to have fun, and it doesn’t actually feel like you’re even working. What’s that quote, “If you do what you love, then you’ll never have to work a day in your life.” Yes, that’s the one. Keep reading to learn about the most unexpected, yet coolest jobs you didn’t know you wanted.
1. Venetian Gondolier
Ever seen an image of a man transporting people down a river in Venice? That’s a Venetian gondolier and it’s actually one of the most sought-out and highly respected occupations in Italy. And it pays well too – most people would love to get paid $150,000 a year for just navigating a boat down a canal. But not anyone can become a gondolier. First, you must find an experienced gondolier to learn from, then complete 400 hours of training, and finally pass a rigorous examination. Sounds easy, right?
2. Mahout
Mahouts are elephant riders who share an undeniable bond and trust with their animal. They’re also paired for life, meaning that they see each other as family. Despite their past of leading elephants into war, mahouts are now rebranding their skills to become forest protectors and habitat keepers. Their roles also include decorating their elephants for special occasions such as the Elephant Festival with colorful rugs, fine jewelry and bells at their ankles. Sadly, the salary is not very much, though the bond with the elephant is truly worth it.
3. Concert Promoter
As a concert promoter, you get to independently produce live concerts, single shows, tours, festivals and other special events. The best part of this job is that you get to learn at your own pace, and most concert promoters start with smaller events before working their way up to larger ones. Though if you lack patience, resilience and savviness, then the job probably isn’t for you. Practical experience and networking also make things so much easier. As for the salary? It usually starts at $42,500 for the year.
4. The Ravenmaster
Although a ravenmaster sounds like an evil Harry Potter character (it’s not), the job is a pretty cool one. It’s pretty much self-explanatory – you get to look after the Tower of London’s infamous ravens. The current ravenmaster is Chris Skaife, who keeps a total of eight ravens at the Tower grounds “just in case” one goes missing. The birds are well cared for and even receive special “enrichment” toys to keep them occupied. To become a ravenmaster, you must first become a Yeoman Warder, and to qualify for that you must be a military veteran with at least 22 years of service. Talk about tough shoes to fill in!
5. Ethical Hacker
If you’re a tech wiz, then this job may be perfect for you! No, you won’t be hacking innocent people without their permission, rather you’ll be hired by reliable and honest companies. The goal is to break into said company’s software or security system in order to highlight any vulnerabilities or weak spots and fix them before malicious hackers are able to spot them. These types of hackers are known as ethical hackers or “white-hats” whose work helps to strengthen a company’s defense system. On average, professional ethical hackers in the US receive $102,000 every year.
