For every heartwarming story there is of a mailman being an outstanding citizen, there’s another that goes the complete opposite way. Instead of committing random acts of kindness while on the job, some mailmen have shady pasts, commit questionable acts while on the job or showcase their extremely weird sense of humor at the most inopportune times. There are countless stories of wacky mailmen and this list highlights five of those craziest situations.
1. The Porch
While on a routine delivery in Denver, an unnamed mailman stepped over a ghoulish Halloween decoration to drop off a package at the front door. A few days later, it was discovered that the “decoration” was the recently deceased body of 46-year-old Dale Porch who collapsed on his porch after returning from an overnight shift. Understandably, the guilt-ridden courier was horrified upon learning the truth and started working a different route shortly after. The family blaming him for their relative’s death might’ve also had something to do with it.
2. When You Gotta Go
One can’t always control when they “gotta go” and unfortunately it tends to happen when there isn’t a bathroom nearby. An Oregon postman understood this all too well when, presumably during a case of the runs, he relieved himself in the best place he could think of: right on someone’s front lawn. A nosy neighbor quickly took pictures of the entire ordeal and sent it to the post office, who suspended the postman for an unspecified period of time. What’s the saying? When you gotta go, you gotta go!
3. Unexpected Packages
When an Irishman started seeing mysterious puddles under his mailbox (which was built into his front door) he installed a CCTV camera to try to figure out what could be the cause. He did not expect to review the footage and see his 52-year-old mailman making passionate love to the opening of his mailbox. Said mailman was suspended and upon his arrest, expressed “shame and guilt” but offered no explanation for the scandalous incidents. He was suspended and eventually retired, but not before working off 100 hours of community service and paying the homeowner $620 in damages. The mailman disclosed that he would use the time to “drink a Guinness or two and spend more time with his wife.”
4. Drinking on the Job
Workers getting caught drinking on the job is nothing new, but it’s especially dangerous to do when your main duty is driving a vehicle. There have been several mailmen who seemed to forget that alcohol and driving simply don’t mix, like inn 2017, when vigilant Louisiana locals confiscated the keys of 55-year-old Mitchell Molitor after he collapsed in the front yard of a home. Luckily no one was hurt and Molitor was arrested for his third DUI and sentenced to one year in prison.
5. An Odd Sense of Humor
Humor varies from person to person, but there are some things that are just not funny and never will be. 52-year-old David Goodman failed to keep this in mind during his attempt at cheering up a 21-year-old Milwaukee law clerk who “seemed to be stressed out” at work. Upon noticing the clerk’s tension while making a delivery, Goodman stepped into the hallway then returned to the office wearing nothing but his birthday suit. The cops were called and Goodman was arrested and charged for lewd and indecent behavior.
